Real cherries, spontaneously fermented lambic and Belgian brewing tradition – fruity, delicately tart and wonderfully refreshing.
Kriek Boon is one of the classics among Belgian fruit beers. It's based on a blend of young and old lambic that matures in oak barrels and develops its characteristic flavour through spontaneous fermentation. Plenty of real cherries then come into play.
And by "plenty", Boon really means plenty: 250 grams of fresh cherries are used per litre of Kriek. According to the brewery, no concentrates are used. The cherries ferment together with the young lambic, giving the beer its intense red colour and authentic fruit character.
In terms of flavour, Kriek Boon sits between juicy cherry, gentle sweetness and a pleasantly refreshing acidity. At 4% vol., it remains comparatively light and approachable.
The beauty of it: the cherry here actually tastes like fruit, not like cherry candy. It's exactly this balance that makes Kriek an excellent entry point into the world of Belgian lambics and sour beers.
How it tastes
The cherry is clearly at the centre. Ripe, juicy fruit meets a mild sweetness and the typical, slightly tart freshness of a lambic.
The spontaneous fermentation adds extra complexity in the background, without making the beer unnecessarily challenging. Unlike many particularly dry and wild representatives of the lambic world, Kriek Boon stays soft, balanced and remarkably approachable.
There's also a pleasant sparkle that, together with the fruit acidity, keeps the Kriek from feeling heavy despite its intense cherry character.
Fruity, sweet-tart, sparkling and wonderfully cherry.
Pairs with
Kriek Boon works excellently as an aperitif or a summer terrace companion. The combination of fruit and acidity also makes it exciting alongside cheese, light desserts and fruity sweets.
Its intense cherry aroma can also create a lovely contrast with dark chocolate.
And of course, you can simply enjoy it on its own — well chilled, it's an unusually refreshing thirst quencher.
Our verdict
Kriek Boon shows quite impressively why Belgian cherry beer can be so much more than just "beer with fruit flavour".
Real lambic, spontaneous fermentation, oak ageing and 250 grams of fresh cherries per litre create an authentic flavour in which the fruit is clearly the star.
At just 4% vol., it all stays pleasantly light. A great Kriek for lambic newcomers — and just as much a lovely classic for anyone who already loves Belgian fruit beers.
